Mrs Hamilton once or twice languidly protested about Ruthven carrying me so continually under his arm, and did threaten to banish me if I came into her carriage with my master; but as nurse said emphatically, Really ma'am, I think the boy might have his bit toy out in his own carriage with him, he would be unhappy all the time if Jack stayed at home. Mrs Hamilton languidly yielded the point? she was too lazy to discuss further. But Ruthven knew I was there only on protest, and moved me under his arm, furthest fromhis mama; but he took care to show me all that was worth seeing, especially my uncles and cousins grazing at the roadsides. My black nose peeped over the carriage door, and my master talked to me all the time, his mama keeping absolute silence, as if asleep. As the summer came, I used to attend my master in his garden, and while he used his spade and rake I patiently stood, my feet well fixed into the earth close by. Nor could he get on with his arrangements without me; he inquired before planting each flower where I thought it ought to go and look best, nurse hovering in the vicinity, work in hand, her wary eye ever on us. She never trusted me alone with her precious charge, probably because I was young myself; but I would have defended him against a host of enemies if any assailed him.
