Hermas is supposed by some authorities to have been the Hermas mentioned in St. Paul's Epistle to the Romans (ch. xvi. 14). His writings are quoted by St. Irenaeus, Clement of Alexandria, and Origen as of high authority in the Church, and are commended by St . Athanasius sa 'useful.' Hermas is said to have been a Greek by birth, and to have been brought in his childhood to Italy and sold as a slave. He belonged to the Church in Rome when Clement was Bishop. His book 'The Shepherd' is a curious allegory, now of little account, but regarded at one time as little less than inspired. It has been called by a great writer of our own days ' the Pilgrim's Progress of the Church of the second century.'l In the early Church it was a favourite book of devotion, and still holds a place among the writings of ' the Apostolic Fathers, ' who, however, according to a modern critic, ' were not great writers, but great characters.'2 ST.
