This book is based on the Birkbeck Lectures for 1954-55, and on further researches into perpetual chantries in England and Scotland. 'Chantry' originally meant any service provided by a private chaplain, though from the middle of the fourteenth century the term was restricted to the provision of daily and weekly masses and other services for a private intention, usually the repose of the souls of particular people.
