More DescriptionOver 12,000 Tasmanian soldiers served on the battlefront in World War One, many very honourably. Some eleven Tasmanians won the Victoria Cross and many others received other awards for their gallantry and courage in action. One of these bravest of the brave was Major Arthur Justin Sanford Hutchinson, who lost his life at the young age of 21 at Fromelles, the bloodiest encounter in a twenty-four period that Australians faced during the war. Hutchinson was posthumously recommended for a Victoria Cross, but this was not awarded. This booklet will detail the life of Hutchinson up until his tragic death on 19 July 1916 while serving with the 58th Infantry Battalion of the AIF.
