IT is mind which distinguishes man; distinguishes him from the brutes, on the one hand; and from his fellows, on the other. In many men there are many minds; some commanding from their greatness, others giving way through infirmity. It has pleased the great Spirit above to give to each of His creatures such a measure of mind, or mental power, as He thinks fit; moreover He endows with manifold gifts of grace, those moral faculties of man which ennoble him the most. In our bodies, but more especially in our souls?we are fearfully and wonderfully made. In the exercise of our faculties, and in the marvellous play of our affections, we are not left to work at random or do as we list. In infinite mercy God hath set before us Christians a perfect mind, the model for all; and to this the Apostle refers in the words of the text, ?Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus. And remark here, if you please, in passing, that mind, in this and kindred passages, docs not limit itself to the understanding or intellect, but stands for a word with a wider meaning; such a one, for instance, as disposition used by us. We may therefore alter the word in the text, and read the passage thus, ?Let this disposition be in you which was also in Christ Jesus. And now I want to tell you the mind of Christ; now I desire to lay before you the manifold beauties and excellencies of His perfect disposition. How can I do it, without showing folly, or presumption, or both ? I can hardly tell my own mind, and as for my disposition, in some of its features, I know it no better. How then can I hope to tell you the mind of Christ, or the glories of His divine disposition ? Yet I must t...
