'The Second Homecoming' is an art exhibition catalogue, showcasing works of Elif Sezen exhibited at the Counihan Gallery in Brunswick. It includes a catalogue essay written by Jake Carter, an artist's statement by Elif Sezen, as well as images of art works as part of the solo exhibition. 'The Second Homecoming' as a project showcases Sezen's explorations of cave openings and doors as paintings and works on paper, alongside a digital projection of a poem. The series title refers to the perception of an outsider to a fresh place. In the 'cave-openings', Sezen aims to give glimpses of various landscapes that are beautiful, perfect and nurturing to gaze at, yet inevitably distanced. The term 'outsider' might resonate with refugees, the Indigenous peoples and other displaced, but obviously the work could refer far more broadly, physically or spiritually. 'Door' series represent rather an elusive exploration of a magical door image that signifies a notion of returning home; this time with a truer sense of belonging. The transition between worlds through this door can lead to bridging the dream-like and the real, the internal and the external, integrating the fragments of a displaced soul, and thus bonding the shadow-self with the core-self under the light of an unexpected Oriental atmosphere.
