More DescriptionA worker’s union movement was born in the mid-1930s in the tea gardens of Bengal, famous for its Darjeeling tea, still under British colonial rule. The workers protested the oppression by owners and managers. The struggle pitted unionists, organized by the Communist Party of India on one side, against the owners, their thugs, the tea-garden managers and the constabulary on the other. Despite such powerful opposing forces, the workers, thanks to the organizers and activists, did manage to wrench concessions from the companies. It was to document this socialist struggle that the Communist Party of India sent Somnath Hore, at that time a young artist and activist and later one of India’s foremost painters and sculptors, complete with sketchpad and journal. This book is fascinating document of a struggle that is both local and global, situated in history as well as timeless.
