Salem Grimes figures even a God who works in mysterious ways wouldn't resort to a dead body in a dumpster to answer her prayer request for divine help sticking to her diet - excuse me - Strat-EAT-Gic plan. But a dead body in a dumpster it is, and now Salem and Viv, her octogenarian partner-in-crime-solving, are on the case again. For Salem, the search for the killer of the prominent local doctor is a satisfactory distraction from all the things she needs distracting from - dates with the husband she hasn't known for the past decade, her growing jealousy of Viv's friendship with Dale-the-Annoying, and a mentor who says things that Salem finds increasingly hard to hear. When the doctor's murder is investigated as a hate crime because he was gay, Salem is forced to do some serious praying and soul searching to reconcile how she feels with what she has been told "real Christians" are supposed to believe. Before she knows it, this "distraction" has grown into something much bigger - a test of Salem's reliance on her spiritual mentor, a test of her faith...and a threat to her own life as well.
