More DescriptionDead of Nyte follows Seattle Patrol Officer Kel Nyte's struggle to balance her sense of duty, career aspirations and, with her partner missing in action in the Middle East, raising a teenager as a single-parent. These conflicts fade to a murmur, however, when a serial murderer lures her into the hunt and volleys, like targeting mortars, an ever tightening barrage on her family. While on routine patrol, a text message-the enigmatic DK's manifesto-hits Kel's phone with the threat of serial murder. Even though she has no authority to investigate a hangnail, she decides to probe the first crime scene off-duty and without backup, and falls right into the murderer's hands. Prodded into the pursuit at the business end of a stun gun, anger and humiliation aren't enough resources to perform an investigation of this scale. It takes the warrior DNA bred into her for generations, and coffee, lots of coffee, coffee in quantities only a skilled barista can deliver. On the case, she's partnered with a seasoned detective, but with his "stay-the-hell-out-of-my-way" arrogance, Kel is forced to investigate solo. She combs through riddles, the lesson plan DK leaves at each scene. They not only give insight to his motive, but drive her investigation deep into a layered labyrinth of secrets from her father's furtive past and SPD corruption. But just when she suspects that her dad, the retired police chief, is the prime suspect, DK's next clues include death threats to her fourteen year-old daughter and Kel's sister. Now with a gnat's-breath of time on his clock, no matter what the personal cost, she must find both the killer and the means to stop his rampage before he executes his final lesson.
