The fairies that lived in the trees bore the name of Moss Maidens, or Tree "Trintjes," which is the Dutch pet name for Kate, or Katharine."
The roots of the folklore of the Low Countries (Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg) are steeped in pre-Christian Gaulish and Germanic culture. Examples of this include the worship of trees and woods. Also from this area come the character Sinterklaas, who many people know today as Santa Claus. While much of the information about the origin of the stories is lost, this collection of over twenty Dutch fairy tales includes The Entangled Mermaid, The Princess with Twenty Petticoats, and Why the Stork Loves Holland.
