More DescriptionTHE UDAPPUThe developed Tamil Culture with devotion and bravery:Udappu in Tamil and Udappuwa in Sinhala, a predominantly Tamil rural village, lies in the North Western Province. This is a traditional Tamil fishing hamlet, which is situated 112 kilometers away from north of the commercial capital Colombo, and 25 km away from Chilaw on the way to Puttalam. It is located on a tip of rectangular shape land between Mundal lake and the sea. The livelihood activities in Udappu are predominantly based on fishing in the sea. There are also a few families who run prawn farms. A few others own coconut estates and small business. Udappu is a traditional Tamil fishing village comprises a population of around 16,000; the majority of whom are Tamils. "Udappu" is situated between the Dutch Canal in the East, Indian Ocean in the West, Poonaipitty village in the North and Pinkatti village in the South. The village is well known for its elaborate Hindu temples and unique festivals. The main Kovil "Draupathi Amman" was established in 1750 and recently it was reconstructed as one of the largest Kovils in the country.The people of the village are Hindu Karawa of South Indian origin, whose culture and lifestyle are altogether different from other people engaged in deep-sea fishing living along the coast of Chilaw District.
