This book is a journey to discover the monuments and the stories behind them. Journeys of exploration are open, not defined, nor ever completed. Details of the monuments around the city are provided in chapters, each monument or group of monuments accorded a section; there are 101 sections arranged in 6 chapters. A 7th chapter looks at the plaques on benches. An index at the end of the book points to the page number and section for each monument.This book is an introduction. The reader is invited to undertake their own discoveries, reflecting on what the monuments reveal to them about Edinburgh and about the events and people that shaped it.The monuments are arranged by location, to each one of six chapters: Princes Street and its gardens; The New Town; Calton Hill; Royal Mile; Leith; rest of Edinburgh. The book cover shows, in rows, a few monuments from each of these chapters. Within each chapter each monument or group of monuments is accorded a section, numbered sequentially by chapter; there are 101 sections. An index facilitates searching. Plaques on benches are described in Chapter 7. But the book is more than an exploration of the monuments. Chapter 8 asks questions. Why erect monuments? What do they tell us about the city? Who should be honoured with a monument?
