Her mother, a skilled surgical RN, has little time for her lonely daughter. Having come to idolize her athletic father, Ruth follows in his footsteps and attends college on a track scholarship. Soon she rejects Catholicism entirely and begins a long, difficult search for meaning and spirituality.

When postpartum depression turns into bipolar disorder, Ruth falls into a spiral of self-medication and despair. She divorces her first husband in favor of destructive relationships with manipulative men who only worsen her mental illness. The only shining star in her life is her son, Kasey. A seven-time All-American Scholar Athlete like his grandfather, Kasey seems poised for greatness.
