Few plays have caused such a stir as that following the premiere of Henrik Ibsen's A DOLL'S HOUSE. It was absolutely scandalous! The sanctity of marriage in respectable society was a matter no dramatist should dare question-let alone do so without passing judgment on his errant heroine! Published in 1879, it was not allowed an unaltered English language production until 1889. It has since, of course, become a classic and is, perhaps, the best known of Ibsen's work in the U.S.Nora Helmer, its central character, is a middle class housewife with three children. Torvald, her husband, adores her. She is his "little skylark" his " little scared, helpless darling." She is everything to him except his equal. And Nora herself is seemingly satisfied with her status until a situation arises that opens her eyes to the true nature of their relationship.
