More DescriptionThis book aims to develop a Legal Governance, Risk Management, and Compliance framework (GRC) on Precision Agriculture (PA) as a sustainable alternative to Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs). GMOs have been touted as saving the world by increasing food supply and maligned as a lever by which Big Ag constrains the market while doing untold damage to public health and delicate ecosystems. The appeal of GMOs is that scientists can select traits to suit a variety of needs, from drought tolerance or insect resistance to increased yields. So far, nothing has been able to compete in the open market, despite compelling arguments by organic agriculture components.
Precision agriculture allows farmers to maximize the outturn of each seed planted. This is achieved by using tools like Global Positioning Systems (GPS) that help farmers follow directions as to how much fertilizer should be used on specific areas to bolster yields to the absolute maximum. By matching the quantity of fertilizer applied to carefully defined needs in specific areas, significant yield gains have been achieved using this technology. Rather than testing entire fields to gauge maximum applications, success has been reached by systems measuring plant nutrient needs related to leaf color.
Featuring coverage on a broad range of topics such as crop monitoring, precision agriculture, and agronomic data processing, this book by Dr. Del Valle seeks to define a legal GRC framework on the current research on technological applications within precision farming as a sustainable alternative to GMOs.
