Born in 1921, Margaret Runyan Castaneda grew up in Charleston, West Virginia. In 1956, she met and fell in love with Carlos Castaneda, an enigmatic man who wrote a series of novels and spiritual books detailing the adventures and learnings that he shared with the Yaqui Indian Shaman Don Juan Matus. On the advice of her new love, and eventual husband, Runyan Castaneda enrolled in Los Angeles City College for three semesters to study Russian.
After her six-month marriage to Carlos Castaneda ended in 1960, Runyan Castaneda stayed in Los Angeles for a few more years before moving to Maryland to work as a switchboard operator at the TV station WTOP in Washington, D.C. In 1973, Castaneda and her former husband learned their Mexican divorce was not legal, and were formally divorced. Two years later, Runyan Castaneda wrote the book A Magical Journey with Carlos Castaneda, which describes in detail her brief married life to Carlos Castaneda.
