Dinkins, David N. (Author)
David Norman Dinkins was a politician and a lawyer. He was the 106th mayor of New York City, from 1990-1993. He was also the first African- American to hold the office. He was born in Trenton, New Jersey on July 10, 1927. He served in the Montford Point Marines in 1945-1946. He graduated from Howard University with a bachelor's degree in mathematics. He earned his law degree from Brooklyn Law School in 1956. His career in politics also included serving in the New York State Assembly in 1966. He went on to become Manhattan borough president from 1986-1989. After leaving office as mayor, he worked for Columbia University as a professor of professional practice at the Columbia University School of International and Public Affairs. He wrote A Mayor's Life: Governing New York's Gorgeous Mosaic (2013) with Peter Knobler. David Dinkins died on November 23, 2020 at the age of 93.
