During a blizzard on the night of January 27, 1998, a Delta DC-10 en route from Augusta, Maine to Lake Placid, New York slams into the side of Moose Mountain, near Lebanon, New Hampshire. Karl Raynt, 79, an Auschwitz doctor who worked under Josef Mengele, and the second-most-hunted Nazi war criminal in the world, is the sole survivor, retrieved from the impending horror of his Hell by a woman who claims to be "...one who still believes that you were ever worth creating!" Known only as ´The Friend´, she has come to ask a final question, "Do you know what you are?", to which Raynt replies, "Evil!" But was he?
Karl Raynt is personally responsible for the deaths of 53 victims during medical experimentation. He was the only Auschwitz doctor, other than Mengele, to successfully elude capture for over fifty years. He thought it was due to luck. It was not.
He is given a mission, a chance to redeem himself for his 53 victims by healing 53 others whose only hope is a miracle. Along the way, he must learn what he is, what he was, and what the power of love is truly capable of. If he succeeds, he will be given the chance to prove what he really is. What he wants is Absolution for his sins. But he is promised that he will receive "...exactly that which you truly believe you deserve." He fails to pay attention to another cryptic prediction...that the most difficult lesson in life is that, "...winning what you want often means losing what you already have."
After a successful rescue from the crash site, the severely injured Raynt finds his first ´miracle cure´ in Lebanon Emergency General. Aided by an RN, Jama Winters, he restores a young motorcycle accident victim to such perfect health that old bone fractures and dental cavities from childhood are gone. In the process, Raynt himself is healed. It seems like a dream come true, but it soon becomes a curse. The media, already covering the story of a plane crash with one miraculous survival, now gets wind of a ´miracle cure´ in the ICU, and unknowingly ties the boy, Raynt, and Jama together. Raynt is still a hunted man, and knows that it will just be a matter of time before a Nazi hunting organization sends someone to investigate his now publicized name. He knows he must leave the hospital, and that he can never return to his home in Surry, Maine. With the help of Jama, and her skeptical, somewhat bitter brother, Dr. James Winters, Staff Neurologist at LEG, he is hidden in a rundown apartment building directly across the street from the hospital. This building is owned by Andrea ´Addie´ Weissal, an Auschwitz survivor. Raynt is reluctant to meet her, but agrees to go there as ´Carl Ryan´, under the mistaken belief that she would never recognize him for a doctor at the Camp. But time has not erased the memories!
Meanwhile, in Tel Aviv, the Israeli Justice League is informed of the potential War Criminal in the United States. They have a problem... while they have a complete set of fingerprints recovered from the Nazi´s own records at Auschwitz, they have no two descriptions of him that are alike! But within their ranks is possibly the greatest Nazi Hunter of all time, seventy-five year old Murray Klein. Klein, who lost his entire family plus his Gypsy fiancee and unborn child to Auschwitz, and lived out the rest of the war in the Czech Resistance, has a unique tie to this case. He once had Raynt at gunpoint in a church cemetery shortly after the war ended, and failed to pull the trigger. In all the years so, of all the Auschwitz doctors he pursued, only Mengele and Raynt eluded him. And one of them, he later discovered, may have tortured and killed his fiancee, and their baby who was born in the horror of Mengele´s Block 10.
As the only person who may recognize Raynt on sight, Klein is teamed with Airman First, Benjamin Symes, an Israeli Delta Commando, and sent to Lebanon, New Hampshire to verify the identity of Karl Raynt.
