Alfred Pritchard Sloan, Jr. was born on May 23, 1875 in New Haven, Connecticut. He attended the Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute of Technology and graduated from MIT.
Sloan went to work for the Hyatt Roller Bearing Company and his idea to produce anti-friction bearings for automobiles was so successful that he became the president of Hyatt by the time he was 24. Hyatt was eventually merged into the United Motors Corporation and, later, General Motors. Sloan served as president of both of these companies and the chairman of the board of General Motors.
Sloan wrote two books, My Years with General Motors and Adventures of a White Collar Man.
Sloan died on February 17, 1966.
