More DescriptionEnglish summary: Adversative connectors mark contradictory connections between two sets of circumstances but can also be used as a way of structuring discourse. But how do adversative and non-adversative applications behave in relation to each other? Which of these applications can be seen as the more original? This study looks at the development of specific adversative connectors in Northern Germanic languages as well as the functional relationship between their adversative and non-adversative applications. The analysis is based on a corpus of Danish and Swedish texts from the 9th up until the 18th century, as well as on data from modern Northern Germanic languages including Danish, Faroese, Icelandic, Norwegian and Swedish.
