For generations, the humans had been breeding up their servants to improve them from simple beings to useful and talented fliers. Anne was a young woman in the Seventh Settlement. Her beloved servant was in trouble, and she did the only thing she could think of to rescue her in time, calling on her childhood friend, the best flier in all the settlements. Ralif was champion year after year. His demonstrations of flight could stop all work in the settlement. He was equally known for the quality of his fawns. He was everything he could be, the best of all of the Wings. And he had a secret. Ralif agreed to help Anne, but things did not go as planned and their actions started a chain of events which tested the rules of the settlement and challenged what it was to be human.
