It is a single volume compilation of critical, social, political, economic and geographical data on Africa providing an accurate overview of these aspects of the continent. The compilation is organised into four sections. The first - general introductory data - includes information on official languages and dependencies; and maps showing geographical regions, language coverage and islands. A chapter on social data covers populations, urbanisation, human development ratings, education and literacy, life expectancies, child mortalities and human poverty indicators. A mass of economic data is provided on GDPs and GNPs, economic growth indicators, the composition of the workforce, debt, development aid, external trade and exports. The section on political data documents Africa's present leaders and all leaders since independence, previous and forthcoming elections, and countries' relative military strengths. It further illustrates Africa's political landscape with maps showing regional economic groupings, conflict zones and areas of displaced populations.
