More DescriptionAggrey Memorial Secondary School, (permit me to use the name I am so conversant with), is one of the "BIG SEVEN" Secondary Schools in Cape Coast, popularly referred to as "The Capital Of Education in Ghana".There, we have-:WESLEY GIRLS' HIGH SCHOOL. (1836)MFANSTIPIM SCHOOL (1876)ADISADEL COLLEGE (1910)ST. AUGUSTINES' COLLEGE (1930)AGGREY MEMORIAL1940)HOLY CHILD SCHOOL. (1946)GHANA NATIONAL COLLEGE. (1948)I have put their ages in brackets to let the world know "who is who".The relationships among the schools, at least during our time and even before, had always been cordial.Such a bond was cemented through Inter School debates, invitations to attend various events and, above all, Sports; INTERCO, FOOTBALL, BOXING, CRICKET, HOCKEY, NETBALL.Cricket and Hockey were the two disciplines contested between Mfantsipim and Adisadel, I must say, on very regular basis. Our status as a Hockey playing School never matched Adisadel's,let alone Mfantsipim's.As for Cricket, our P.E.Master, Mr Amoabeng(bless him) never mentioned it once!We didn't even have a single cricket ball, let alone a cricket bat.The one area where the competition was most intense was examination Results.Students were always interested to know how many students in a particular school got this, how many got that in "O" and "A" Levels,It was a healthy obsession.Meeting up again in University was always a happy reunion!Visits to other schools were carried out by those who had friends and siblings in other schools. Here, it was not uncommon for other students to accompany friends who wished to visit other friends, siblings in other schools. The desire was just to know the other schools. That was why some of us accompanied Ebos (Fletcher) on some of those occasions he went to Wesley Girls' to see his senior Sister. The difficulty encountered in getting transportation to the place, the long walk did not deter us but we did not make it a habit!Seeing an author in the flesh has always been an exciting experience, especially where that author happens to be one whose work is a best seller. That was why the number of those who wanted to go and listen to (The Late) Chinua Achebe spilled over ,leading to Egya Woode making more than the number of the agreed trips. The World renowned author was giving a lecture in Cape Coast Town Hall. You see, Chinua Achebe's book, "THINGS FALL APART" had been chosen as a text book and our counterparts in other schools were equally anxious to see the man in the flesh and listen to him.Cape Coast Town Hall was packed to the main door! The experience has always remained with me!!What was the overall relationship between our various Houses? It was normal, very normal indeed,What was noticeable though, was the fact that particular House members kept themselves to themselves.Visits to other houses were brief and diplomatic.Expressing oneself in one's dialect was common and normal. There was nothing like "SPEAK ENGLISH".We were free to express ourselves in any dialect we preferred.
