More Description Lewis Carroll's (1832-1838) iconic piece of nonsense literature, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, was originally published in 1865. Originally written for youngsters, Carroll's brilliant language and comedy have made it a perennial favourite of adults. Carroll's writing has impacted or inspired authors such as James Joyce and Neil Gaiman, as well as surrealist painters such as Salvador Dal and philosopher Gilles Deleuze. The novel has been widely translated and adapted and has never been out of print. In 1871, Carroll wrote the sequel Through the Looking Glass, which has since become a classic. This guide is based on the 1977 Easton Press edition of The 100 Greatest Books Ever Written, which is part of the collection The 100 Greatest Books Ever Written.
