Soon she is taking directions from the Cheshire Cat, attending a tea party with the March Hare and the Mad Hatter, and playing croquet with a deck of cards.
Six months later--sitting by a cozy fire, her adventures over--Alice wonders what life is like on the other side of the mirror above the fireplace. Without a second thought, she climbs up the mantel and steps into a world where people move about in paintings on the wall and chessmen stroll arm in arm around the room.
