A Historical Taste of Britain brings history and regional cuisine together, offering the reader an opportunity to create and try out many of the local cultural dishes from Britain's Historic Counties using recipes from the past. The recipes include regional favourites such as Cullen Skink, Miners Faggots, Boxty and Bacon, and Trench Stew, just a few of the dishes once eaten by our ancestors. This unique publication explores the history of Britain's counties and the heritage of regional cuisine, from the time of the Romans up to the Industrial Revolution, with full colour images and etchings. A selection of four to five historic recipes, some dating to the 1st century, are reproduced after a summarised history of each of Britain's counties in each of its four nations, Scotland, Wales, Ireland and England, describing local customs, folklore, religious beliefs, regional and national conflicts, peoples cultural past, standards of living and their agricultural and working practices. A Historical Taste of Britain will not only appeal to all those who have an interest in history and traditional cookery, but all those who also have an exploratory appetite.
