More DescriptionThis collection is divided into five units: Buddhism and philosophy; Buddhism and psychology; Buddhism and other paths; Buddhism and scholasticism; and Buddhism and me. The unit on Buddhism and philosophy contains three essays that reflect my lifelong interest in American pragmatism and explorations of how the concerns of classical Indian Buddhism overlap with concerns found in the writings of Charles Peirce and William James. The unit on Buddhism and psychology contains three essays resulting from my dabbling in Jungian psychology. Buddhism and other paths comprises six essays, all of which were originally given as talks in gatherings of members of different religious communities who met to explore differences and similarities among major religious traditions. The Buddhism and scholasticism unit is the most academically technical in that the four entries collected there are the result of the close reading of texts written by Indian Buddhist scholastics. The final unit, Buddhism and me, is the most personal in that it contains two autobiographical pieces written in response to requests, one written when I was in my early forties, the other in my early seventies.
