Thereafter, the protestant church in the country's west theologically appropriated parliamentary democracy for itself. In 1985, the church documented its declared relationship to the liberal-democratic constitution in a memorandum that is still much noted today. Just over 30 years following its publication, the present volume examines the origins and reception history of the memorandum. German description: Das Grundgesetz wurde nach 1949 auch deshalb schnell durch die Bevolkerung angenommen, weil die Kirchen die neue freiheitlich-demokratische Verfassung mitgetragen haben. Das war nicht selbstverstandlich. In Weimar fiel es der evangelischen Kirche nach dem Wegfall des landesherrlichen Kirchenregiments schwer, sich in der neuen Verfassungsordnung einzurichten. Nach 1949 nahm die evangelische Kirche hingegen eine konstruktive Rolle ein und eignete sich die parlamentarische Demokratie als Staatsform auch theologisch an. 1985 dokumentierte die Evangelische Kirche in Deutschland ihr geklartes Verhaltnis zum liberaldemokratischen Verfassungsstaat in einer bis heute viel beachteten Denkschrift. 30 Jahre nach dem Erscheinen dieser Denkschrift fragt der vorliegende Band nach der Entstehungs- und Wirkungsgeschichte dieser Denkschrift.
