Formline is a 2-dimensional Indigenous visual language. It is seen in the art of the Indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest Coast of North America, spanning from the Gulf of Alaska down along the coast of British Columbia. The Tlingit are among the northernmost practitioners of this distinctive curvilinear artform. Formline designs created today are the result of thousands of years of artistic evolution and innovation. Each featured design was originally created as paper snowflakes by Tlingit artist Benjamin Schleifman, and have since been digitized to create the unique mandalas you see in this book. Some of the snowflakes took up to 6 hours to make! Each design is printed on a single sheet of paper so they can be removed for display.
