The Middle Ages and the Early Modern Age constitute a crossroads for the allegorical interpretation of animals, for their scientific observation and for the methods of representation in art. Dealing with monkeys, mermaids, griffins, lions, crickets, hawks, and more, the volume deals with the complex metaphorical language offered by the variety of ways in which animals were theorized, seen, imagined, told and depicted in society and in history between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.
