More Description WELCOME READERS Finding out about my diabetes was a double shock. Sure, I knew I was pretty wrapped up, but felt like I was eating relatively well while leading a fairly active lifestyle, walking a dozen kilometers a week and cycling in Montreal during the summer. How could I have become diabetic? This disease was reserved for others, for those who care little about their body, not for me!
I was also troubled by my poor knowledge of diabetes. I have a doctorate in physics, I work on amyloid diseases, which are often associated with Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease, but which also directly affect type 2 diabetics, and I am passionate about popularization of science, taking an interest in the most diverse subjects, ranging from free will in the modern world to the Higgs boson. Yet other than the fact that sugar is bad for diabetes, I didn't know anything about the most basic elements of the disease.
If you have just been diagnosed with this disease, you may be as ignorant as I was. Maybe, just like me, you will think, at least initially, that it is better not to learn more, hoping that this will be enough for the disease to go away, as if by magic, wrapped in a cloud of ignorance. You can also tell yourself, on the contrary, that if you learn everything there is to know, you will be able to take back the reins of your life.
However, that is not all to understand: we must act on this knowledge and be ready to change our way of life and our habits as quickly as possible. Indeed, the faster we change, the easier it is to control diabetes and even, as we will see, to overcome it.
That's why I'm starting this book with a quick review of what diabetes is, picking up some data that you are probably familiar with, but which will prepare you for a more detailed examination of this disease, its origin and its effects. long term presented in the next section.
