Late 1971, Australia is in the Vietnam War. Eighteen-year-old males must enlist for army conscription. Ted is eighteen. His first year of university did not go well. And the rest of his world is beginning to shift too. He may even love his girlfriend, his friends are changing as well, and his future looks like quicksand, or at least a sodden paddock.He can enlist for Vietnam or break the law and risk gaol. Everyone has an opinion for him on his future; as if he doesn't have enough problems. And so to a third option - leave the country. He sets off on the "hippy trail" overland through Asia to Europe.Asia, 1972: Timor before the Indonesians; Afghanistan before the Russians. Moving through an odd assortment of characters and places, Ted is often out of his depth. But the traveller lifestyle is enough to keep him enthused. While worried about his place within all the weirdness, the experience is not one he can give up, and he takes to it with gusto.What could possibly go wrong?
