More Description Assessor Hanaud, the notable French criminal investigator, is on vacation in Aix les Bains when he is asked by a youthful Englishman, Harry Wethermill, to explore the homicide of a well off widow, Mme Dauvray. Mme Dauvray has been choked and her significant gems, which she wore 'with too little judiciousness', are absent. Her servant Hélène Vauquier has been found higher up, oblivious, chloroformed, and with her hands bound behind her back. Doubt promptly falls on Mme Dauvray's young English partner, Celia Harland, who has disappeared. Celia is infatuated with Wethermill, and the last begs Hanaud to take looking into it in the unshakeable conviction that despite appearances Celia is guiltless of the wrongdoing. Hanaud consents to do as such.
Mme Dauvray had been entranced by mysticism and part of Celia's job as partner had been to organize séances for her and, as an alleged medium, to invoke signs from the soul world - which she did by acting and cunning. Hanaud finds that she was to have led a séance the evening of the homicide.
