More DescriptionBank of the Yellowstone continues the story of soldier, scout, and frontiersman Rufus Randall and his partner and lover, Sarah Locke as they try to establish a ranch and home on the bank of the Yellowstone River. The novel picks up the story told in The Unceded Territory and Yellow Calf's Medicine. It is April of 1876 and the remaining free Sioux, under Sitting Bull, are heading straight for the Green Valley Ranch as they head to Canada to escape the U.S. Army. Tipped off by their friend and Army scout, Mr. Moor, Randall and Sarah help Mr. Jenkins and his son save their supply wagons, buying his cattle herd and supplying the merchants of Deadwood. While Randall agrees to help the Sioux on their road to Canada, young Mary, unstable after giving birth to her daughter, runs off with a drover that Sarah had hired to help with the cattle. Sarah and young Patrick follow and run into a group of renegades that are operating farther west along the Yellowstone. Randall, now appointed a federal marshal by General Miles, heads west to save them and to investigate the theft of Army supply money and a Gatling gun. Their adventures lead them to Deadwood and then out on the prairie as Randall attempts to stop the army deserters and renegades and foil their plans.
