The system, which was developed following years of experience in malarious countries, deals with each step of the diagnostic routine in the correct sequence, encouraging trainees to build skills and confidence in a sequence of steps that mirror the day-to-day routine in their future jobs. Emphasizing the advantages of learning by doing, the training program relies heavily on the use of such enjoyable learning techniques as role-play, group discussions, fieldwork, and supervised practice sessions, with lecture presentations kept to a minimum. The manuals are intended for use during a formal period of training lasting six weeks or less. A detailed day-to-day and session-by-session model timetable is included in the Tutor's Guide. Both manuals are structured around 12 learning units, moving from training in the clinical recognition of malaria, through the exact steps to follow when making thick and thin blood films, to instructions for measuring the density of malaria parasites and identifying their stage and species.
