These proceedings contain seven reports on novel interaction techniques and upcoming user interfaces challenges. They were compiled during the Fall semester 2009 as part of a semester-long PhD-course titled "HCI - Beyond the Desktop" at the University of Lugano in Switzerland. It was the first time that this course was held, and we commend the seven authors of these articles for their hard work and determination, for the class turned out to be much more work than many of us thought it would be.
