Geoffrey Cornell Hazard Jr. was born in Cleveland, Ohio on September 18, 1929. He received a bachelor of arts degree from Swarthmore College in 1953 and graduated from Columbia Law School. He began his legal career in private practice in Oregon. He taught at numerous institutions including the University of California, Berkeley; the University of Chicago; Yale University; the University of Pennsylvania, and the University of California, Hastings College of the Law. He was the director of the American Law Institute from 1984 to 1999.
He became one of the nation's most respected authorities on legal ethics. His journal articles were cited in a number of United States Supreme Court decisions by both conservative and liberal justices. He wrote, co-wrote, or edited about 20 books on civil procedure and professional responsibility including Ethics in the Practice of Law. He died from heart failure on January 11, 2018 at the age of 88.
