More DescriptionThe Joshua Bouchard site is a submerged Native American site located in the northern basin of the Trap Falls reservoir in the Town of Shelton, Connecticut. The author located the site in the late summer of 2005 while walking the shoreline during extreme drought conditions. Water company workers determined the water level had dropped approximately 12' - 14' feet beneath the average surface level. Unfortunately, the research only lasted a few months as heavy rains in early October of 2005 re-submerged the site to a depth of 4' - 6' feet below the reservoir's surface. The water level had not increased or decreased more than a few feet since. It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to investigate such a significant archaeological site. The research scope of the research lacked a stratified soil matrix or comparable contextual artifacts and features. The surface finds consisted of stone artifacts that included; projectile points, scrapers, knives, and stone tools recovered in a well-defined and isolated geographical area with no other cultural intrusions. The report is based on Brewerton and Lamoka-type artifacts recovered on Frontenac Island in the adjacent state of New York. The earlier excavations, were conducted by William Ritchie (1965) and Robert Funk (1988).
