More DescriptionIt traces the Cargile family back to its origins as the Cargill Clan in Perthshire, Scotland, in the 16th century. The book relates the influence of the Reformation on the Cargill clan. Donald the Martyr was a cousin of one of my direct ancestors. He was one of the leading converters. He was hanged and beheaded in 1681 for his preaching against the Church of Scotland. Our Cargill ancestors moved from Scotland to Northern Ireland before immigrating to America.John Cargill immigrated to Virginia in the early 1700s, moved to North Carolina in 1779, and the name became Cargile. His descendants moved to Tennessee, then Alabama. A large number of Cargiles settled in Jackson County, Alabama, in the early to mid-1800s, staying there until about 1920. Prior to the 10th generation, almost all the Cargiles were farmers. The 10th generation saw the men leave the farm and take other jobs, then move away from Alabama. The 11th and 12th generations moved to Missouri, California, and Texas. The Lowery and Reece families are also included and traced back to the early 1800s.
