The narrative relates the account of the sensitivity of a young woman to Carmilla, a woman vampire. It is 26 years before the Dracula of Bram Stoker. In cinema and other media the narrative has been adapted several times. The narrative is provided by Le Fanu in Dr Hesselius' casebook which he is ranked first occult doctor in literature when leaves medical orthodoxy. Laura, one of the two principal actors in the tale, tells the story. In a "picturesque and sturdy" story, Laura opens her story by telling her childlike.
