More Description
from The Drunk Singer (I)
sits on the curb outside the bar and sings,
her legs stretched out into the town's one street.
She wasn't even halfway through her second set,
deep in her cloud of first- and second-hand smoke,
when all the interruptions become too much:
the man who shook the telephone and yelled
he still deserved at least another chance,
and closer, the constant advances of the idiot questioner,
who wanted to know where she'd been all his life-
all these rough drafts, desperate for revision,
forced her to take her insulted act outside,
into the first cold winds of late October,
which slam the summer shut and lock the storm
windows in place, in all the houses over the bay.
