More DescriptionBlood transfusion is an essential part of modern health care, and when used correctly can be a life-saving intervention. However, the transmission of infectious agents by blood and blood products has focused particular attention on the potential risks of transfusion. This publication has been prepared by an international team of specialists, and aims to promote good practice in the clinical use of blood products. It provides a set of learning materials for use in undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, in-service training and continuing medical education programmes. It is split into three sections which look at: principles regarding the appropriate use of blood products and clinical transfusion procedures; clinical transfusion in the areas of: general medicine, obstetrics, paediatrics, surgery and anaesthesia, trauma and acute surgery, and burns; and practical issues for clinicians and blood transfusion specialists.
