More DescriptionChristian Hunt has the one thing that he has longed for: the love of a family. But they have returned home with a secret that can never be allowed to see the light of day, and must do everything in their power to guard it or risk the consequences that exposure will bring. But their joy is threatened when a ghost emerges to wreak havoc on their lives, and Christian is forced to confront his inner demons even as he struggles to protect the woman he loves from an unseen danger that lurks in the shadows. "So? Did you tell him?" Christian demanded in a low whisper after all of their good-byes were said and they stood on the front porch watching as Ian slid into the passenger seat of her BMW for Donald to drive him home. "Not yet," she mumbled, the smile on her lips remaining firmly etched into place as she waved at the car until it was out of sight. "I wanted to, but I just couldn't bring myself to do it," she muttered, her hand dropping to her side as she turned toward Christian, her heart breaking at the disappointment that shadowed his face. "Why not? I thought that was why you asked him to come to lunch, so that you could tell him in person," Christian growled. "And that's my cue to leave. Good luck, Jess," Kip called out, a wary look descending onto his face as he turned and practically ran back into the house, leaving her alone with Christian. "I will. I promise. I'll tell him. Soon," she assured him with a quiet smile. "Do it tomorrow," he ordered. "Do you want me to go with you to help him pack? It might make it easier if we spoke to him together." "No," she replied with a shake of her head. "I think it would be better if we were alone when I told him. He's going to be very upset that we aren't reopening the practice." "But, Goddess, it's not like I'm asking you to give up your practice completely," he muttered, his face masked by a sulky scowl as he frowned down at her. "We already agreed on this months ago. You promised you'd work at the office with me during the week and you'd only take on a few patients to see on Saturdays." "I know. And I will, my darling," she assured him with a nod. "It's just that I had promised Ian we would reopen the practice the way it was before we left on our honeymoon, and he's going to be disappointed that we're not doing that." "But it's not like he'll be unemployed. He'll still be your secretary. He'll just be working at Hunt instead. And he can still work with you when you find an office to reopen the practice if that's what he wants," Christian argued, his emerald eyes narrowing to skeptical slits as he peered at her. "Are you having second thoughts? Is that why you didn't tell him as yet? Because you don't really want to work with me?" Even after all they had been through together, the insecure child residing behind the polished exterior still needed affirmation of her love, still needed her constant reassurance that she would not abandon him. And she knew that it was not because she had ever given him a reason to doubt her commitment to him, but because of his own vulnerability, the doubts that he harbored about his own worth, the fears which had arisen from his mother's inability to be his protector in a world from which she had needed protection of her own. The scared little boy inside of him would forever need her guarantee that she would not forsake him the way Evelyn Hunt had, would forever need her to provide the security which his wounded soul so desperately sought. And she would forever offer it to him willingly, would forever be there to dispel his fears and chase away his anxieties, because there was a part of her which needed him to need her.
