As he wanders Zagreb in a near-hallucinatory state of paranoia and malnourishment, Melkior encounters a colorful circus of characters--fortune-tellers, shamans, actors, prostitutes, bohemians, and café intellectuals--all living in a fragile dream of a society about to be changed forever.
