A Book Written by a Designer for Designers
This two part book has been a labour of love of 5 years in the making.
I wanted to know how other Designers learned and worked, I wanted to further understand the place of Design in the world through it's philosophy and applications.
- The first question came to be explored in volume one through a fact finding journey, taking me from Europe and the Americas to Asia, and back again.
Design institutions, Educators and Students from all for corners of the globe were explored comparatively so as to understand and evaluate that crucial transition which takes place from student to profession-hood.
- Volume two furthers this theme of transition, however by taking a some what radical shift in subject matter. This being necessary so as to understand the 'Micro' place of Design in adjacent to the big and busy world of the 'Macro' global Socio-Economic framework we live in.
This often led me to feeling out of my depth, with quite daunting and demanding research subjects of Economics, various facets of Engineering, Finance and even Law requiring due diligence. I was determined however not to give up in coming to a satisfied conclusion of what the place and future of Design could be.
In the course of my journey I was led to the very fringes of society, where emerging and alternative models of Socio-Economic framework revealed to me existed, as well as a host of amazingly talented and visionary groups and individuals, which may one day hold the key to a prosperous and sustainable future for all of us - a future sustainable, by Design.
- Design Matters will have fellow Designers of all fields and interested readers alike witness the world from a very unique perspective, if anything.
Come with me on this journey and in the end, draw your own conclusions, on what you think Design ought to be.
