More Description
This essay is the first of a group of three devoted to Lawrence?s writings. The division is chronological rather than by genre, and this first essay examines Lawrence?s work up to July 1914, the end of ?the first phase of his maturity?. In selecting this dividing line, Mr Littlewood, Senior Lecturer in English at the University of Bristol, has wished to choose the first moment ?of which it is possible to say that Lawrence is truly himself and has found himself as an artist?. This point is marked, the author believes, by two stories contained in The Prussian Officer (published in 1914) ? ?Daughters of the Vicar? and ?Odour of Chrysanthemums?, the latter being a revised version of a fictional comment on Lawrence?s parents? marriage, originally written in 1909. The essay also discusses Lawrence?s first three novels, The White Peacock, The Trespasser and Sons and Lovers. This and the two subsequent essays each contain a complete biographical introduction and bibliography, and together succeed that by Kenneth Young in this series.
