More Description
DARBY'S ROAD is a literary historical fiction set in 19th & 20th Century Ireland and America.
In 1855, Thomas Darby Martin, a member of one of the most prestigious Protestant families in Ireland, is banished from his beloved country. 'Darby' loves Ireland more than anything or anyone in his life . . . except for 'MARY', the woman he has obsessed over since childhood but who has married another man. Only twenty-five years old, Darby earned a notorious reputation over all of western Ireland by continually pursuing his vices of liquor, women, and gambling. The Martin elders, led by his brother, Edward, went to great lengths to protect the family name in the past, covering up all of Darby's bad behaviors. However, when their youngest son commits murder by killing Mary's husband in a bar room brawl, they draw the line. They take away his birthright and tell him to change his name and never return to Ireland again. He vows that he will use lies and deception to cover up the truths of his cold past and never share his former life with anyone, not even the young and lovely lass he spies on the ship, 'Brigid Anne Finnegan'. Admiring her from afar, he longs to make her part of his new life in America.
Along with the many other Irish immigrants of the mid 1800's, Darby faces a rocky road as an Irishman in America. The country is in a great deal of turmoil. His "Road to Righteousness" will not be an easy one. There is a Civil War brewing in America and Darby has developed some very serious feelings about "FREEDOM" as a result of his deportation. He wants it for his children who, to his great dismay, "will not be Irish". Brigid has some dark secrets of her own, ones that she will never admit to anyone, especially Darby. As they begin their new lives in a new country, their mutual webs of deception will haunt them, taking them back to their former lives in Ireland - if only from their graves.
DARBY'S ROAD is the second stand-alone, non sequential novel in Maura/Clu's new collection of books, THE SCATTERED SEEDS TALES FROM THE GREAT MELTING POT. Each novel is literary American fiction set in history.
"We are a country of immigrants and every family has a story to tell . . ."
