ABOUT DEAD SOULS A Devastating Satire on Social Hypocrisy '
But wise is the reader who, on meeting such a character, scans him carefully, and, instead of shrinking from him with distaste, probes him to the springs of his being.' Dead Souls is a novel by Nikolai Gogol, first published in 1842. It is Russia's first significant novel, one of the most peculiar works of nineteenth-century fiction, and a devastating satire of social hypocrisy.
The protagonist, Chichikov, an enigmatic stranger and conniving schemer, purchases the names of deceased serfs from their landlords' poll tax lists, intending to mortgage them for profit and reinvent himself as a likable gentleman.
Gogol created a grotesque gallery of human types in this ebullient masterpiece, including the bear-like Sobakevich, the insubstantial fool Manilov, and, most notably, the diabolical con man Chichikov.
