More DescriptionMemoir of a Canadian immigrant family through their harrowing journey across the Atlantic in the dead of winter and their life in a new nation in the mid-20th century. Win Lewis was a mother of two young children and pregnant with her third when she boarded the famed, Aquitania in Liverpool and set sail to Halifax, Nova Scotia during the harsh winter of 1949. Following one of the worst crossings the Captain had ever experienced, Win and her family had to adapt to living in Fort Erie, Ontario where life was very different from her war-torn home in England.Even if a woman followed all the rules to the letter, deportation could still knock on her door. This true story happened when I was a child, recounted many times over the years. It was a period when women had the vote, but little else without a male to support her. Women of this era were resourceful, proved their strength to overcome the hardship of war, endured deprivation of rations and yet flourished to support their children.
