More DescriptionThe problem of filioque is explained using three significant Christian works of literature from the Middle Ages: Photius' Mystagogie des Heiligen Geistes, Konstantine Melitiniotes' Zwei Antirrhetici, and Augustin's De Trinitate. This problem is essential for the divergence of the western Latin and the eastern Greek churches and theological traditions. In order to clarify the orthodox opposition to filioque, the author examines the arguments for their theological and philosophical soundness. He examines the two Antirrhetici of Melitiniotes and questions whether the filioque approach is truly routed and plausibly reasoned in Augustin's theological speculation. Finally, he addresses today's discussion of filioque-questioning, and touches upon the issue of the relationship between Theologia (God's being) and Oikonomia (God's self-revelation in the history of salvation).
